Samsung’s bats are hot. They pounded out 19 hits, setting a new record for most hits in a game this season. Starter Taylor Widener recorded her first win since joining the team, thanks in large part to her teammates’ hot support.
Samsung swept the weekend’s three-game series with a 12-2 victory over KIA in Daegu on April 18. KIA, on the other hand, entered Daegu in good spirits after finishing the three-game series in Kiwoom with a 2-1 record, but their winning streak came to an end as they were overwhelmed by their opponent’s firepower.
Samsung’s batting order was center fielder Kim Hyun-jun, right fielder Kim Sung-yoon, designated hitter Koo Ja-uk, catcher Kang Min-ho, third baseman Ryu Ji-hyuk, left fielder Jose Pirela, first baseman Oh Jae-il, shortstop Lee Jae-hyun, and second baseman Kim Ji-chan.
Samsung manager Park Jin-man said of Widener’s first start in the bullpen, “He threw fewer pitches in his first appearance. He’s pitching after four days of rest, but I think he’ll be fine. There may be some pressure because it’s a home game, but I hope he can overcome it.”
KIA’s starting lineup was shortstop Park Chan-ho, first baseman Choi Won-joon, third baseman Kim Do-young, right fielder Na Sung-beom, designated hitter Choi Hyung-woo, center fielder Socrates, left fielder Lee Chang-jin, catcher Han Jun-soo, and second baseman Choi Jeong-yong.
Speaking about Kim Sun-bin (infielder), who returned to the first team ahead of the game, Kia head coach Kim Jong-kook said, “He’s recovered more than 90% and he’s not in pain, so I called him up to the first team today. He was stable in training,” he said, adding, “Hamstring injuries have a high chance of recurrence, so we will approach them with caution.”
Samsung had the first laugh. Koo Ja-rook led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to center off KIA starter Yoon Young-chul. Kang Min-ho followed with a walk and Pirela doubled to left-center to score another run.
Samsung exploded for a whopping seven runs in the fifth inning. After a walk to Kim Hyun-jun and a single to left by Kim Sung-yoon, Koo Ja-rook brought both runners home with a double to left-center. Kang Min-ho followed with a double to left-center.
Ryu Ji-hyuk walked on a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Pirela hit a three-run shot over the center field fence off second pitcher Kim Yoo-shin. Oh Jae-il struck out swinging, but Lee Jae-hyun doubled to left field and Kim Ji-chan singled to right-center field for two more runs. Trailing 9-0, KIA scored two runs in the seventh on Socrates’ triple to right-center, Lee Chang-jin’s sacrifice fly to right field and Choi Won-jun’s RBI single to right. Samsung added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles by pinch-hitters Kim Dong-yeop and Kang Min-ho. In the eighth inning, Kim Young-woong’s infield single scored the 12th run.
Samsung’s Widner pitched six innings of five-hit ball with seven strikeouts and no runs. It was his fifth win of the season and first since his transfer. Among the batters, Kim Sung-yoon (5-for-3 with two RBIs), Koo Ja-uk (4-for-2 with one home run, three RBIs and one run scored), Kang Min-ho (4-for-2 with two RBIs) and Pirela (5-for-4 with one home run, four RBIs and two runs scored) stood out. Lee Jae-hyun and Kim Ji-chan also had multi-hit games.스포츠토토
KIA starter Yoon Young-chul suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits (one homer) with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings. It was their fifth loss of the season. This ended his winning streak at ‘4’ since last month’s game against SSG in Munhak on May 5. Leadoff hitter Park Chan-ho completed a three-hit game, but was overshadowed by his team’s loss.
