Despite a three-hit, two-RBI performance from Los Angeles Angels slugger Shohei Ohtani, 29, the Angels were unable to snap a three-game losing streak.
Ohtani started in the No. 2 spot in the lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday (July 30) at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, raising his season batting average to .307 from .304.
The Angels went with Nolan Chanuel (first base), Ohtani (designated hitter), Brandon Drury (second base), Mike Moustakas (third base), Hunter Renfroe (shortstop), Logan Ohopy (catcher), Mickey Moniak (center field), Hunter Renfroe (right field), Randal Grichuk (left field), and starting pitcher Tyler Anderson.
The Phillies countered with Kyle Suwaber (left field), Trey Turner (shortstop), Nick Castellanos (right field), Bryce Harper (designated hitter), Alex Bomb (first base), JT Realmuto (catcher), Rodolfo Castro (second base), Edmundo Sosa (third base), Yohan Rojas (center field), and starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen.
Ohtani’s first at-bat was a leadoff single in the top of the first inning. He took a slider from Lorenzen, but was thrown out at third on a foul fly.
Once he was warmed up, Ohtani went on a hitting spree. In the top of the third, he reached on an infield single with runners on first and second. In his third at-bat, with runners on first and third in the top of the fifth, he lined a single to center field to give his team a run.
In the top of the seventh inning, he hit a well-struck pitch directly to the right fielder, who took a step toward the dugout. In his final at-bat, a two-out, two-run double to right-center field in the top of the ninth, he added another RBI. The batting lineup did its job.
Both teams opened the game with a barrage of home runs in the first inning. In the second and third innings, both teams traded runs. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo shot by Renfroe, but Harper answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. The third inning was more of the same. The Angels scored a run in the top of the third on an infield single by Ohtani and a fielding error to make it 2-1, but Schwarber followed with a solo shot to tie the game at 2-2.
The Angels continued to push forward, taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Renjipo and a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Ohtani.
An error cost the Angels in the bottom of the sixth inning. Castellanos led off with a single to left, but left fielder Grichuk couldn’t make the first catch, leaving two runners on base. The Angels loaded the bases with nobody out and runners on first and second trying to avoid facing Harper.
However, the move ultimately failed. Spring followed with a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 4-5. A squeeze bunt to Rojas with runners on first and third brought in a run, 4-6, and a two-run triple to Turner with runners on first and second made it 4-8.
The Angels answered with a solo home run by Grichuk in the top of the seventh to make it 5-8, but the Angels gave up an RBI single to Realmuto and a two-run double to Bryson Stott in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-11. They then gave up a solo home run to Turner in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-12.스포츠토토
In the top of the ninth, the Angels got on the board after Chanuel singled to left and scored on a fielding error. Ohtani followed with an RBI double to make it 7-12, but it was too little too late for the Angels to make a comeback.
