Shosei Togo (23) of the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball threw a whopping 140 pitches for a 10-inning no-hitter, but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
Togo took the mound for the Giants’ home game against the Junichi Dragons at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on Aug. 8, allowing just three hits into the 10th inning, while striking out 11 and walking two. Despite his 140-pitch effort, the game ended in a 0-0 tie in 12 extra innings.
Dogo allowed just one hit through six innings. He loaded the bases with one out in the first with a walk, but a swinging strikeout and an outfield popup ended the inning. The second inning started with a strikeout, a grounder to second base, and a fly out to shortstop. The third inning ended with a strikeout and two infield grounders.
In the fourth, he allowed a leadoff triple to Bright. With the bases loaded, he retired the next three batters in order with a grounder to third, a grounder to shortstop, and a swinging strikeout.
The fifth and sixth innings were back-to-back triple plays. None of the Junichi hitters’ balls left the infield.
Dogo gave up his second hit of the day to Takaya Ishikawa two batters later in the seventh, but retired the next batter on a swinging strikeout. A strikeout and two fly outs in the eighth ended the inning.
After throwing 108 pitches in the eighth, Dogo threw 15 pitches in the ninth to end the inning. After throwing 123 pitches in the ninth inning, Dogo took the mound in the 10th with the score tied at 0-0.
He got back-to-back strikeouts to load the bases and gave up an infield single to Takuya Kinoshita. He got pinch-hitter Sunta Goto to fly out to right field on a 140-pitch, 150-kilometer fastball to end the inning without a run.
Yomiuri had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning of extra innings, but Kazuma Okamoto grounded out to third base. Dogo turned the ball over to the bullpen in the 11th inning of extra innings, missing a chance to win for the first time in 36 days since Aug. 3.
Dogo threw 149 pitches in his Aug. 3 win over Yakult, allowing one run on nine hits with 10 strikeouts in nine innings. He lost three of his next five games. In 21 games this season, he is 10-5 with a 2.77 ERA and 118 strikeouts. He is tied for second in wins, sixth in strikeouts and ninth in ERA.
Yomiuri had runners on first and second and second and third in the 11th inning of extra innings on two walks. Junichi starter Leia Nakachi shut down the Yomiuri offense for seven innings (99 pitches), allowing three hits, four walks and six strikeouts. Seven bullpen pitchers then pitched into the 12th inning.
The game lasted three hours and 40 minutes. Junichi used 23 players, including eight pitchers, while Yomiuri finished with three pitchers thanks to Dogo’s 10 innings of work. Chunichi batters combined for three hits and 15 strikeouts, while Yomiuri batters had five hits and 12 strikeouts.메이저놀이터
“Yomiuri’s 0-0 draw was the first since Hanshin (Koshien Stadium) on September 24, 2018, and the first 0-0 draw at Tokyo Dome in 11 years since Hanshin on April 30, 2012,” said Japanese media outlet SporNichi Annex.
