Preparations for the season are going well. Moon Sung-min, a veteran and the second most senior player on the Hyundai Capital men’s professional volleyball team, is taking the court in good shape and injury-free for the first time in a while.

Moon Sung-min is joining MBC as a volleyball commentator. He will serve as a commentator for the second match of the men’s volleyball Group C match between South Korea and Cambodia at the Asian Games on Aug. 21.
The Hyundai Capital organization was also happy to have Moon take the microphone. Hyundai Capital’s preseason matches in Danyang, North Chungcheong Province, ahead of the start of the 2023-24 Dodram V League season, wrapped up on Tuesday.
Along with soccer, men’s volleyball at the Asian Games is on the schedule ahead of the official opening day of the tournament on Nov. 23. South Korea, coached by Lim Do-heon, is in Group C alongside India and Cambodia and will play its first match against India on Tuesday.
A total of 19 teams participated in the men’s volleyball competition at the Asian Games, including Korea and host China. Teams are divided into six groups, with the first and second place finishers in each group advancing to the round of 12 tournament. If Korea tops Group C, they will meet Group D 2, which includes Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, and Mongolia, in the round of 16.
Commenting on his debut as a commentator, Moon Sung-min said, “It’s a new feeling to be commentating on Korea’s matches away from the court. It’s strange to watch the game from the studio, but I will do my best to commentate with the mindset of playing on the court together.”
Moon was a member of the 2006 Doha (Qatar) Games, the last time men’s volleyball won gold at the Asian Games. At the time, he was the youngest member of the national team and spent a lot of time in the warm-up zone watching the seniors play.
He has since earned a starting spot on the national team and has become one of the most prominent players in Korean men’s volleyball. For Moon, the Asian Games were still a disappointment.
At the 2010 Guangzhou (China) Games, Korea went for back-to-back gold medals but had to settle for bronze. At Incheon 2014, she did not wear the Taekwondo mark due to injury. At the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang (Indonesia) Games, his last Asian Games, he made it to the final, but was unable to overcome Iran.

Meanwhile, the preseason match in Danyang is being played by five V-League men’s teams, including Hyundai Capital, Samsung Fire, Woori Card, KB Insurance and KEPCO. Korean Air and OK Financial Group did not participate due to team commitments such as training camp. Participation in the preseason match is not mandatory. Last year, six teams played to warm up for the season as OK Financial Group did not show up due to their training schedule.
Many of the players and coaches in this preseason match have ties to the Asian Games gold medal. It’s been a long time coming. The 2002 gold medalists in Busan include Kim Sang-woo of Samsung Fire, Choi Tae-woong of Hyundai Capital, and Kwon Young-min of KEPCO. Kwon and Yeo Oh-hyun (Hyundai Capital) helped Korea win back-to-back gold medals in 2002 and 2006, while KB Insurance head coach Hoo In-jung and KEPCO coach Lee Sun-gyu were also members of the 2006 Doha team.
