As Neymar heads to the operating table, his club Alhilal is in shock.
“Neymar has torn the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee,” the Brazilian Football Confederation said on its official website on Sept. 19, adding, “He will undergo surgery and is expected to miss a long period of time.”
Neymar started the match against Uruguay in the fourth South American Zone qualifier for the FIFA Confederations Cup North and Central America 2026 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Aug. 18.
Neymar fell unnaturally in first-half stoppage time while contending with an opponent. He grabbed his left knee and complained of excruciating pain. Neymar clutched his head as if sensing a major injury and was stretchered off.
Neymar was examined by his team, Alhilal, and faced the worst possible news: anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injuries. “The date of the surgery and rehabilitation program will be determined at a later date,” Alhilal said in a statement announcing the injury.
For Neymar and Alhilal, the odds are stacked against them. Alhilal met Neymar last August when he was playing for Paris Saint-Germain (France). Considered one of the best players on the European stage, he came with a high price tag.스포츠토토
While the terms of the contract were not disclosed, soccer statistics website Transfermarkt reported that Neymar’s transfer fee was 90 million euros (about KRW 13.16 billion) at the time of the transfer.
That’s a lot of money. According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Neymar will earn $300 million over two years, rising to $400 million if he fulfills additional options.
“I feel like it’s the right decision at the right time,” Neymar said in his signing interview, “I love winning and scoring goals and I’m looking forward to continuing with Al Hilal.” However, his progress stalled early in the season.
This season, Neymar has scored one goal in five official competitions, including three league games. Al-Hilal and Neymar have two years left on their contracts. Neymar’s season-long suspension means he’s lost half of his contract.
