KT went for the kill and it worked, but NC is still cautious. Going into Game 5, the Dinos thought they had a starting matchup advantage with Eric Pediro, but the manager was unsure.
The NC Dinos were swept 2-11 in Game 4 of the ‘2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO Postseason’ against the KT Wiz at NC Park in Changwon on March 3. It was expected that KT would have an advantage due to the large weight difference in the starting fight. However, the result turned out to be a bigger difference than expected.
NC completely surrendered the lead early on, as starter Song Myung-ki gave up four runs in 1⅓ innings and second pitcher Lee Jae-hak gave up four runs in 2⅓ innings. The offense was shut down by KT’s William Cuevas, who didn’t get his first hit until the sixth inning and was coming off just three days of rest.
The question is Game 5. In the postgame press conference, NC manager Kang Myung-ho was asked about the starting pitcher for Game 5 and gave a surprising answer. He couldn’t say Pedira.
“Pedi’s condition hasn’t recovered 100%. I’m thinking about it. Shin Min-hyuk is not bad either. We’ll check his condition and decide tomorrow.”
The KBO will announce the starting pitchers for the next game at 9-10 a.m. on moving day. Until then, both teams, as well as the LG Twins, who are still waiting for the Korean Series, will have to wait for a starting pitcher for Game 5.
Pedi made his KBO postseason debut in Game 1 of the playoffs at KT Wiz Park in Suwon on April 30. It’s been a rough road to get here. He was pitching against the KIA Tigers on April 16, with the Doosan Bears and SSG Landers in a tight race for the final spot, when he was hit by a pitch to the right arm and went down.
While it didn’t lead to a serious injury, the impact of the hit left a lasting impression. The bruise was followed by elbow impingement syndrome, which kept him out of Game 3 of the playoffs. If the series had gone to Game 4, he would have pitched here. 무지개토토 도메인
Up until this point, it was a close call. NC finished the semifinals with three wins and no losses, allowing Peda to pitch Game 1 of the playoffs. Peda pitched six innings of three-hit ball (one home run) with 12 strikeouts. The 12 strikeouts are the most in a single playoff game in history, passing Seon Dong-yeol and Chris Flexen.
After Game 1, Pedi said, “It’s the culture of NC that every player goes out there and plays like they have to win. Despite being labeled an underdog, NC has won five straight games in the postseason. Our goal is to advance to the Korean Series without any problems.” It was never a player’s attitude to save himself.
It’s also not a good idea to pitch when you don’t feel comfortable. Manager Kang Shin-ho seems to have taken this into consideration. Even in the semifinals, he was very careful about scheduling Pedi’s appearances, listening to the player’s opinions.
